Technical Information Surface Finish | General Formulas

A

The corner radius of replaceable inserts is very important in finish machining. Large corner radii ( 0.8 mm (0.031"))or higher allow for high feed rates with good surface quality. The expected surface quality can be estimated by using the function of corner radius and feed rate formula.

1. The larger the corner radius and the lighter the feed rate is, the better the surface quality.

2. If the feed is approximately 1/3 of the corner radius, the better the machining time and surface finish will be in finish machining applications.

3. A larger corner radius increases radial forces, which can negatively affect dimensional accuracy. Large corner radii also require increased depth of cut.

Vc = D x π x n 1000

Minimum depth of cut (a p ) should at least match the corner radius. This minimizes the radial forces.
